Exmor RS IMX318

The Japanese company Sony has announced a brand new Exmor R sensor for mobile devices dubbed as IMX318 with a size of 1/2.6 it is the first stacked CMOS sensor in the mobile industry that has built-in hybrid autofocus and 3-axes electronics image stabilization. It also has industry’s smallest unit pixel which measures 1.0 micrometer in size which is good and suitable for thinner smartphones also very compact and suitable for other types of mobile devices. The IMX 318 is a 1/2.6 type sensor with 22.5 megapixels effective resolutions despite that company claims that there is no drop in image quality in low light condition.

The unique feature of this sensor is integrated hybrid autofocus (AF) support.Usually, Hybrid AF consists of more than one form of autofocus usually, it merges plane phase detection AF with contrast detection AF means there is no need for a separate processor to accomplish the purpose of new IMX318 because it has incorporated both things into the sensor’s internal signal processor. The company also claims a fastest focusing time of 0.03 second for taking photos and as fast as 0.017 seconds when shooting videos at 60fps (frame per second).

The other important feature company added in this sensor is the integrated 3-axes Image stabilization it can remove the camera shaking problem and lens distortions so that you can take 4K (3840×2160 pixels) resolutions videos by using the signal output generated from the external 3-axes (pitch, yaw, and roll) gyro sensor.Apart from that Sony also has adopted the MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface) Alliance’s latest C-PHY 1.0/D-PHY 1.2 interface which improves power consumptions also achieves faster data transmission from the image sensor to application processor.
